A walk around the Saxon walls of Wareham visiting the small nature reserve known as Priory Meadow
Wareham Walls and Priory Meadow: home sweet home
Tuesday, 23 December, 2014
If you are ever in my home town of Wareham and have an hour or so to spare why not take a walk around the walls of what was an important town in saxon times. The natural defences south and north of the town were the two rivers, the Frome and the Piddle (or Trent) and then, behind these, high earth banked walls were built. These walls are now a designated local nature reserve although, being cynical, most of the interest lies not on the walls but on and around the two rivers that pass by on their way to nearby Poole harbour.
To make the walk worthwhile it is worth spending a little while in the small Priory Meadow nature reserve on the oposite bank of the Frome to Wareham Quay. if you have time then sit awhile on one of the many seats and watch, there is always something happening on the river!
Neither site is particlarly rich in wildlife but they are a valuable resource for the town. Sadly, however, local people seem to pass them by without taking any notice and it is generally the town's many visitors that walk the walls and take time to stop at the quay. There are leaflets with maps and other useful information available from the tourist information office (which is now in the library close to the quay). There are also a number of interpretation boards on the sites but they have illustrations of many species that you are unlikely to see there ... but that is quite common. I wonder who designs these boards and whether any thought really goes in to them?
One not of caution! These are popular dog walking spots so watch where you are treading! The dogs are not a problem, it is their owners who refuse to accept responsibilty for their animals that are the problem!
There are pleasing views in all directions from Priory Meadow; across the wares to the distant Purbeck Ridge, or along the river towards Poole Harbour, or across the river to the old buildings on Wareham quay. So do, if you are in Wareham, take some time out for a short walk around the walls and the pleasant little Priory Meadow nature reserve.
